“ I am cutting out the logo in front of me right now like a diary and putting it into a painting. New styles, buildings, technologies, and ways of expression are born every day, but on the other hand, there are things that are declining or being lost. The things that are right in front of us will not be right in front of us one day. Sometimes we may notice the value of those things after we lose them, and other times they may be completely forgotten. I wonder how my work will look differently in a few tens or hundreds of years. ”– Erika Naka

Naka uses fragmented logos, natural landscapes, and familiar objects from daily life as visual elements in her paintings, and reconstructs shapes that make abstract meanings visible. 'When I paint with a thick layer of paint on a support, there is a moment when the paint moves beyond my expectations, and a “gap” is created between myself and the support.' She believes that the attraction comes from the fact that things don’t turn out the way she expects.

As a young artist, she has continued to explore the possibilities of painting, breaking through traditional painting forms to directly express “instantaneity” and “coincidence”. The thickness of the paint, the layered gradation, and the soft, creamy texture of her subject-less paintings not only have a strong impact on the viewer, but also inspire infinite curiosity and imagination.

「Current location」 series uses the icon in the real space that the artist found while walking around as a motif. The meaning of the number of the title is the coordinates on the Google maps, and it guides you to the place where the icon in the reality of the work is. However, it might have already disappeared, because it is not immutable. The artist records what once existed, what exists now and what will exist in this rapidly-changing era.

'저는 제 앞에 있는 로고들을 오려내어 일기처럼 그림으로 만들고 있습니다. 새로운 스타일, 건물, 기술 그리고 표현 방식은 매일 같이 새롭게 태어나지만 한편으로 쇠퇴하며 없어지는 것들이 있습니다. 지금 우리 앞에 당연히 존재하는 것들은 어느 순간 당연하지 않은 것이 되기도 합니다. 우리는 때때로 무언가를 잃고 난 후에야 그 가치를 깨닫기도 하고 어쩌면 완전히 잊어 버리기도 합니다. 수십년, 수백년이 지나 내 작업은 어떻게 달라져 갈지 궁금합니다.' - 에리카 나카

작가는 단편적인 로고, 자연풍경 그리고 일상 생활에서 익숙한 것들을 시각적인 요소로 사용하여 추상적인 의미를 가시화 시킨 모습으로 재구성한다. 패널 위에 물감을 두껍게 그려나갈 때, 그 물감은 작가의 예상을 뛰어넘어 순간의 움직임을 갖게 되고 작가와 패널 사이에 생긴 뜻대로 되지 않는 '차이'가 생긴다. 작가는 항상 기대하는 대로 되지 않는다는 사실로부터 매력을 느낀다.

신진 아티스트로서 작가는 전통적인 회화의 형식에서 탈피하여 '순간성'과 '우연성'을 직접적으로 표현하며 회화의 가능성을 지속적으로 탐구한다. 물감의 두께, 겹겹이 쌓여진 그라데이션, 부드럽고 크리미한 질감은 보는 사람으로 하여금 강한 시각적 임팩트를 느낄 수 있게 할 뿐만 아니라 무한한 호기심과 상상력을 불러일으킨다.

에리카 나카 작가의「현위치」시리즈는 작가가 직접 걸어 다니며 찾아낸 현실 공간에 있는 아이콘을 모티브로 삼았다. 작품 제목 숫자의 의미는 구글 지도상의 좌표이며 검색 시 해당 작품의 현실 속 아이콘이 있는 곳으로 안내한다. 작품 속 소재들은 영원할 수 있는 것은 아니기에 어쩌면 미래에 사라질 수도, 혹은 이미 사라졌을 지도 모른다. 많은 것들이 급변하는 이 시대와 공간 속에서 작가는 존재했던, 존재하는, 존재할 것들을 차근차근 기록해 나간다.
